From the beginning of November 2021 students at Bolton School of the Arts will have the opportunity to engage with a wonderful array of art and design professional talks and masterclasses in a week dedicated to professional engagement across the creative arts.

Maggie Hargreaves
Solar Etch Masterclass
Alumni & artist Maggie Hargreaves will be giving a masterclass workshop in solar plate etching to second year students in Fine Art. A technique she has mastered over the years through her own practice. Since graduating Maggie has shown her work in numerous exhibitions, art fairs and engaged with several collaborative projects. In 2014 she was winner of the prestigious John Ruskin Prize for Drawing.
Maggie’s work reflects an interest in the constantly shifting space where we interact with the natural world we inhabit. Prior to studying Fine Art at Bolton University, Maggie was a research biologist and this is reflected in a process driven practice where she works with drawing, print, sculpture and installation.
Maggie has shown work at The Portico Library, Manchester, New Mills Arts Festival, Derbyshire, neo:gallery, Bolton and The Chapel Gallery, Ormskirk. Selected group shows include Corduroy Studio 44 Stockholm & Land Marks Air Gallery Altrincham.
Mario Popham
Mario Popham is a photographer, curator and educator of Japanese and English descent currently based in Manchester, UK. He graduated from the Manchester School of Art in 2007 and has since continued to work on personal projects and commissions. His interests lie in man’s paradoxical relationship to the natural environment and how this finds expression within the post-industrial areas of Britain, with particular focus on the northern regions of the country.
His work has been exhibited in the UK and abroad, most recently at HOME, Manchester and Groundwork Gallery, King’s Lynn for his ongoing collaboration with artist Tom Baskeyfield.
He is currently developing long-term projects in both the UK and Italy that explore place in the context of industrial legacy, nature and community.
In his role as curator at Waterside, Trafford, he is working towards establishing a dedicated photography program for the Greater Manchester area. The venue’s inaugural photography exhibition, Sweet Debris took place at the venue’s gallery in 2019. The graduate showcase program, First Light, launched as an exhibition at Castlefield New Art Spaces, Warrington in May 2021. The latest group exhibition, She Appeared to Vanish, launched in September as part of a partnership with HOME MCR.
Rachael Addis
Rachael is a contemporary painter based at Rogue Artists’ studios in Manchester. Her practice is fundamentally a mark making process; in which she creates abstract landscapes by applying a multitude of painted layers and patterns to the surface of canvas and paper. Her personal biography has had an important inspiration on the process, colours and aesthetic of her work.
Originally from the Lake District, she lived in Asia for her formative years. Throughout this time, Zen Buddhism imprinted itself as an influence on her distinctive mark making process. Also heavily influenced by 1950’s abstract expressionism painters, the philosophies from these cultures and movements begun to mould and shape her style and attitude to the painted surface.
Rachael’s current paintings seek to establish a contemplative and meditative aspect both for the viewer and for herself. She uses unconventional processes to create her paintings, abandoning paintbrushes for found and recycled materials such as discarded fragments of toys.
Following her degree in Fine art, Rachael completed the three year postgraduate programme at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. She is a re-emerging artist, following a break from painting she began to paint seriously again in 2018.
As well as exhibiting UK wide, selling her paintings nationally and internationally, her work has been accepted into several exhibitions. This includes the Jackson’s Open Painting Prize 2021, Ing Discerning Eye, Art Gemini Prize Peoples Choice Winner and was recently crowned “Manc of the Year” by the arts organisation Cotton on Manchester. Rachael was a featured artist in the 2020 BBC documentary about the Royal Academy summer exhibition. Alongside painting, Rachael is a lecturer in Fine art.

Exhibition Catalogue Design Masterclass
A workshop demonstration covering the do’s and don’ts of creating a catalogue for artist exhibitions, whether solo or groups. Utilizing Adobe’s CC InDesign software, the workshop will cover aspects of layout, font choices, sizing and will also include information on the industry standards that print companies expect.
