Standard a multi-disciplinary arts collective of seven talented BA (Hons) Fine Art graduates from Bolton School of the Arts show in their exhibition Froth at PS Mirabel Gallery Manchester. ‘froth’ is their 5th exhibition, having previously shown locally and in Bolton’s twin town, Paderborn in Germany.
They collaborate on the principle of having no mission statement, their artists are free to explore subjects and themes without prompts and, rather like a newspaper, they curate and edit as a group on installation day. This eclectic and inclusive outlook is reflected in the group’s strapline, ‘Pulling together in different directions’.
For this exhibition, with the serious nature of the major news stories of the last eighteen months in mind, the group decided over a Zoom meeting to settle on the playful title of ‘froth’ as a point of departure.
Standard regularly invite guest artists to contribute to shows and for ‘froth’ they have maintained the town’s Paderborn connections by inviting Elmar Brinkmöller from Raum für Kunst to contribute.
Standard collective was formed in 2016 by BA(Hons) Fine Art graduates. Its success is exemplary of graduates building upon experience and knowledge acquired through University of Bolton’s School of the Arts & Creative Technologies professional practice modules.
The group works in a variety of disciplines towards exhibitions in which each artist presents their own response to a range of subjects in a Reportage style format. They have shown several times in Paderborn, Germany and have formed strong partnership with the town, artist groups and arts council. A recent show Upload, at Castle Park Forum, Paderborn, took place in August 2020. Funding for a further Standard collaboration and visit to Raum für Kunst has been confirmed for summer 2022.
