Metamorphosis is the ability to change from what was, into something new or different. In my work I have experimented with different mediums, such as clay, Modroc and some very fine metals, such as foils. Some were stable others not. Slip casting was a favourite, as it was extremely fragile and unpredictable in terms of how it would develop, yet so beautiful in its finished form.
Kintsugi is the Japanese art of broken pottery, which would be repaired using molten gold, giving new life to an object that would normally be discarded. The concept of my work emphasises these two processes: the ability to heal something that is ‘broken’. It is these techniques that shape the outcomes of my work and it is fascinating to see how the final pieces often turn out unexpectedly beautiful.
