Artist Statement
.
My work looks at the effects of natural decay, corrosion, and destruction. The work is transient, much like nature itself and I use decayed leaves, twigs, and rusted metal to portray some of the physical elements of natural decay.
The main medium for my artwork is textiles. I use vinegar and tea to extract the rust and stain the fabric. Using tea makes the fabric a brown colour with bright orange marks, whereas vinegar leaves the fabric with bright orange rust marks. Incorporating materials such as wadding, scrim, twigs and leaves lends texture, and elements of the artwork are three dimensional. I aim to use natural and recycled materials to connect my work directly to ‘Mother Nature’.
