Artist Statement
This body of work explores the notion of empowerment. The idea of women reclaiming their identity from the patriarchal structure in society, finding sexual liberation through masturbation and taking back control from the policing of our bodies.
Female masturbation is stigmatised and seen as immoral and unnatural and society has taught women that their sexuality and anatomy are something that can be controlled by attaching shame to us expressing our desires, it creates a lack of self-power that makes women submissive.
The intent of my concept was to use solo sex as an act of resistance to the societal stigma in which women’s bodies are seen as a political playground which come with legislations formed by men.
